5 Things To Do In The Summer With Decking
We have reached that stage of the year where the mornings and evenings are offering us a little more daylight, there is a bit more warmth in the sun and the garden has colour and is starting to need some attention again. The weather might still be a little unpredictable, but that’s living in the UK for you, and that shouldn’t stop you getting the garden ready for the summer months and some long days and evenings sat outside on the decking.
But if you are not yet a convert to decking, you might need some convincing it’s an investment you may well want to make. This is despite a generally-held belief that decking represents the most cost-effective home improvement job you can undertake, at least in terms of the value it adds to a property compared to the outlay in having it installed. But in a truly practical sense, how can a family utilise decking during the summer? Here’s five suggestions from us:
- Barbecues

The British love a barbecue, and we don’t need much excuse to get the charcoal and the sausages out, as soon as there’s a break in the clouds. Whether it’s a birthday, anniversary, the World Cup or simply a glorious sunny day, decking provides a clean, flat and safe environment for people to sit and mingle, as well as an informal seating area for when the burgers are just the right side of turning black.
- Evening drinks
We don’t get too many of them, so you need to plan carefully or act spontaneously, but the long, endless evenings where it’s warm enough to sit outside are perfect for inviting friends and family, or the neighbours, round for drinks, nibbles and giggles. It is also a good idea to include a lighting design in your decking installation so that the mood changes as the light goes and the evening is extended into a relaxed and chilled out affair.
- Watching the kids play
Decking provides a safe and convenient area for the kids to play, and where you can easily supervise them from inside. This means they can keep themselves occupied while you go about your daily chores, catch up on some work, or cook the family dinner. Decking is the perfect way to extend the home and give everyone that little bit more space.
- Rent a hot tub

This is something many families consider but it’s not always practical. Whatever the occasion, decking allows you space and a flat surface to house a blow-up, temporary hot tub for an evening splashing around, and luxurious drinks. It is also possible to incorporate a permanent hot tub into a decking design, just speak to our design experts here at Northern Deckline!
- Alfresco dining
Nothing delivers the sense of being on holiday in a sultry Mediterranean hotspot more than setting up your outside space for some more formal outdoor dining. You can lay out a table on the decking and host a dinner party never to be forgotten, enjoy a romantic dinner for two or host a family meal everyone will enjoy.
So it’s not too late to make these dreams a reality for summer 2022, and if you get in touch with Northern Deckline today, we can send our design experts round to make the most of your outdoor space with a practical and cost-effective decking design and installation.
